How overtime pay is calculated in Bangladesh
Overtime pay in Bangladesh is governed by Section 108 of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, which entitles workers to compensation at twice their ordinary basic hourly wage for work beyond standard hours.
  • Standard hours — 8 hours per day for adult workers in any establishment.
  • Weekly limit — 48 hours normally, up to 60 with overtime, averaging 56/week annually.
  • Overtime rate — 2× the ordinary basic hourly wage, a mandatory legal minimum.
  • Basic salary, not gross — Section 108 applies to basic wages and dearness allowance, excluding house rent, medical, and transport.
  • Don't know your basic salary? — Most BD companies set basic at 50–60% of gross, or use the Standard Structure: Basic = Gross ÷ 1.5, House Rent = Basic × 50%. Use the built-in estimator above.
Overtime pay = (Basic salary ÷ 208) × 2 × overtime hours
The figure 208 represents standard monthly hours — 8 hours/day × 26 working days. For daily wage workers, divide the daily basic wage by regular hours per day instead. For piece-rate workers, Article 108(2) allows employers and workers to agree on a reasonable average hourly wage.
Factories and garment manufacturers must keep accurate daily overtime records — a standard checkpoint during DIFE inspections, BGMEA audits, and buyer compliance reviews.
